I watch her pelt the volleyball over and over again against the garage wall. My heart expands. My middle pixie, born with fire in her bones, loves this sport.
She’s made it her own, honing in on her craft. In her free moments, she steals outdoors to pepper with her older sister. In the evening hours, she watches countless matches on tv in order to understand the sport better.
She is in love with it. And because she is in love with it, she is working at it with all her heart.
Love is a tricky thing to write about in our world today. Perhaps no word has been taken out of context more, been trampled underfoot, abused. That’s why I’m struck every time I open His Word and find sketches of His unfathomable love scribbled across the pages.
I read it Sunday afternoon sitting on the front porch. The weather was perfect as the wind blew a cool breeze through the trees rustling the leaves as the sun warmed my skin.
“that you being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” ~Ephesians 3:17b-19.
As I read over Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians my heart swelled at the idea—I can be grounded in His love. What does it mean to be rooted in God’s love?
The rustling leaves before me provided the perfect picture. I was reminded that the wind may blow but because the white pine in front of me is grounded in the soil—its root system sure—it can bend this way and that, yet still stand strong.
My favorite place to sit at home is on our front porch. I spend countless hours reading and writing there. It’s become my “office”. The woodpecker beats his song into the tree bark. The pin oaks dance before my eyes swaying in the breeze.
We can be grounded in the same way as these oaks when we are confident of Christ’s love for us. His love makes our hearts sure. No matter how strong the winds of suffering blow, we remain steadfast because we are grounded in the love of Christ. Our roots run deep.
Nothing can uproot us from His love.
It is too high. Too deep. Too long. Too wide for us to comprehend.
Perhaps your heart needs to hear this today? Nothing can uproot you from His love.
His love is the undercurrent of everything you walk through. Imagine a current flowing through a creek. The current is a visual of His love for us.
