The Word
“Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed at that moment.”
~Matthew 9:22
The Thought
I read this passage in my chronological Bible the other morning and couldn’t get past the first sentence: Jesus saw her.
The words wrecked me because if I’m honest, the last thing I felt at that particular moment was seen. Doubt and defeat echoed their chant in my mind. My spirit was struggling with the notion that maybe He had forgotten me.
And yet, His Word gently reminded: I see you.
This is such a tender moment in Scripture. A woman with an “issue of blood” (v. 20) reached out in her shame to touch the hem of Jesus’ garment. For twelve years she had struggled with her own anxious thoughts and notions that she might never be healed. But hearing of this man —Jesus— she believed in her heart He possessed sufficient power to heal her of what previously could never be cleansed.
In humility, she reached out her hand. And Jesus turned and saw her.
And what follows indicates that in His turning to her, it was an act of compassion for He called her daughter. In the most tenderest of addresses, Jesus assures her that her faith has healed her; she can go forward in peace.
Perhaps today you feel unseen.
