Trouble is no respecter of persons. Each one of us have unique burdens to bear. We are living in unprecedented times, and we all carry the weight of sorrow in one form or another. Hopelessness is rampant, cynicism is the currency of the day, and we lay down at night, asking to hear some good news the next morning.
The Psalmist was no stranger to heartache and trouble. He penned words that echo the hearts of so many of us, “I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” (Ps. 27:13)
Do we dare believe there is goodness to be found? Is there hope for the heart that hurts day after day? Where do we find the strength to face tomorrow?
If you are at the point where you feel the weight you bear has reached a breaking point may I encourage you with this beautiful parable of the dew drop by one of my favorite writers, Lilias Trotter:
“He maketh small the drops of ‘water.’ I have never seen how literally true that is till I began studying the dew these mornings. Let a drop fall from your finger and you will see its natural size. But that would be too heavy for the frail little blades to bear. It would slip off them from its weight. So He weighs out to each the tiny measure that it can bear without even being bowed down, yet enough to ‘drink into’ abundance.”
He weighs out to each.
These five words stirred my spirit, reminding me that the God of the universe is intimate with each one of us. I can envision his hands of love filtering each droplet of weight through them, sifting, confirming that the tiny measure bestowed is not more than we can bear.
Do you feel you are at your limit? May we find the following comforts in this parable of the dew.
First, God intimately knows you.
Psalm 139 reminds that before you were born, the Creator knew you. One of my favorite lines in this chapter of Psalms says “the days that were formed for me”. (v.16) God actually orchestrated days for each of us, personally. This day, the one that you are living at this very moment, was formed for you. The weight of it measured out by the hands of a loving, intimate Father.
Next, the measure you bear today is bearable. It may not seem like it, but the weight, though hard pressed on every side, will not crush you. (2 Cor. 4:8) At our weakest points, we find strength that is not ours alone. And it is through that weakness where glory shines bright. Your life is a testimony that beauty can arise from the dark places, the struggles that most threaten to waylay our souls. He has weighed out to you precisely what He believes will present you faultless before Him.
Finally, you will drink the abundance. I believe with all my heart you will see goodness in the land of the living. There is a communion with the Father that can only be received by drinking the wine and breaking the bread. Our hope is that the momentary weight we bear will result in an eternal glory that outweighs them all. (1 Cor. 4:17). The weight you bear will one day ultimately be outweighed by glory.
This is the future we have. If a tiny dew drop can teach such a lesson, may our hearts receive the truth that the weight we bear is measured to us by One Who knows how many hairs are on our head. He weighs out to each the tiny measure we can bear.
