Why subscribe to Mend?

Each day we are faced with the opportunity to live lyrics of life or death. Paradoxically, the cross is the intersection of both, with Life overcoming death. Here beauty finds its most brilliant display.

When I began my blog Splintersong years ago, my hope was to encourage others to live the lyrics of the cross.

Lyrics that give purpose, beauty, and joy.

Mend allows us to go deeper into that purpose. Through weekly devotionals we will discover the beauty of a mended life in Christ. We will gather together studying His Word to see how to mend our fractured souls.

Our souls and current culture need mending. There is so much hurt, so much fear, so much splintering. Allow me to elaborate a bit.

There’s a German word, Zerrissenheit, which means “torn-to-pieces-hood”. It’s the idea that we are pulled in so many different directions that our souls are splintering into hundreds of pieces.

We feel this tension acutely. There are numerous demands on us daily. We experience the pressure to perfect various “roles”, and often, the more roles we play the better.

The problem is this feverish pursuit of activities leads to a fragmentation of our souls. We no longer know who we truly are. Our identity becomes what we do, not who we are.

His desire is for us to be Mended, not fractured into hundreds of pieces. It is the Word of God that Mends.

Together, we will see how we are created in God’s image for a specific purpose, and that purpose is for Glory, not to be shredded to pieces.

He wants to mend us, crafted into one piece. When I envision mending, I picture the beauty of a loving Father carefully picking up the broken pieces and restoring order amid chaos.

This is what I hope you find here. A place of mending.

Why This Space?

The move to this space required a lot of time and thought. The Lord has been laying on my heart a small space where privacy, community, and passion can intersect. If we were sitting together on my front porch, you would quickly learn that I want to go as deeply as possible in our conversation and friendship. Here, I can get to know each of you better, and you can also get to know me better. And most importantly, we will hopefully get to know Him better.

Who Am I?

I grew up in Steeler country, learned to drive stick in an old Scout, and studied Greek and Hebrew in seminary. I met a guy in a cafe on campus who was playing Pearl Jam covers with his band. A year and a day later, we were married.

I love homeschooling my three daughters (affectionately referred to as the "pixies."). We spent two storybook years living in Oxford, England while Tim, my Pearl Jam man, finished his doctorate studying beauty in the works of C.S. Lewis. Splintersong, my blog, was birthed from that experience.

The Word of God has always been a lifeline for me. I remember as a young child watching Kay Arthur teach how to inductively study the Bible. It made such a profound impact on my young life, that when I went to college years later, I knew I wanted to spend my time studying the Scriptures.

As a young woman in Seminary, my heart burned to understand the Word of God, and to communicate its truth to those around me. I knew from experience that it had the power to change lives.

What you find here is a natural outpouring of years studying Scripture. A desire to know God and to make His truth known to others. But I don't want to simply know Him in a theoretical sense. The goal is to encounter Him, to have a relationship with Him that is as real as the birds singing their song outside my window.

These lyrics of Life impact all aspects of our day. Whether I’m homeschooling the pixies or sitting on my front porch reading a book, these whispers of Beauty beg to be shared. Let’s live the lyrics together and Mend!
